VLC UDP Streaming, Flying Google Maps & Extra big desktops

How to setup your own video streaming on your network using VLC (more useful than it sounds :) )

If you’ve got a whole bunch of movies on one machine, which you’d like to watch on another, then you’ve got 2 options. If the movies play in iTunes, then you can share them that way quite quickly & easily. If they don’t (i.e. they are DivX or whatever, or you’re not using iTunes/Mac), but they do play in VLC, then you can use VLC to stream them from the host computer to the computer where you want to watch them. This how-to from MacDevCenter is aimed at transmitting a live HDTV stream from one machine to another, but it works with anything VLC can open.

This is better than sharing the network drive and opening the files that way, since there is a *lot* less overhead - i.e. a more stable video stream. Using the HTTP remote control, you can control the video stream arriving at your viewing machine.

Extra Big Desktops

More desktop space is the best productivity boost you can have - being able to have multiple windows open without having them overlap makes life a lot easier. Matrox have (and are releasing a new DVI enabled) box, which presents a single large screen to the OS, and deals with the splitting itself. It looks like a really neat piece of kit.. I could run 2 * 1920×1200 screens from a single MBP… There are dual head, and triple head options..

Amusing OS X login window fun

(Via http://daringfireball.net/ )

The progress bar & window which you see when OS X starts up is nothing but a window popped up by the login window process starting, which it then promptly terminates once it’s ready for you to actually log in.

It’s all just smoke and mirrors!

You can start this process off for yourself (if you’re feeling nerdy and bored), following these simple instructions..

Wedding Photos

Hi all,

Firstly, thankyou very much to those of you who came along on Saturday, it was a really excellent day. If you have any photos of the day, then could you email them to wedding@luckymonkey.co.uk (bigger is better)

I ‘ll make a more complete post this evening with some of the pictures (we’ve had the disposible cameras developed already.. some of you are very wrong indeed!)

A 23″ MacBook - screen sharing

I like this guys enthusiasm for building a single large screen out of his old powerbook, and a new MacBook.

It’s interesting because I’ve tried an application in the past called Synergy, which is pretty cool - and allows you to do something similar (albeit, without the screen-scaling or virtue desktops), but it does allow you to get your mac’s mouse and keyboard to control the PC next to it.. for whatever you might need a seperate PC to do these days.

I have to admit though, I’ve stopped using Synergy and the external PC (which has since been recycled as a Linux server), once I started using Parallels Desktop..

Hemingway theme and Wordpress 2.1

Everything went ok - apart from a problem with the blogroll links. This link has the information to solve it.

Streaming, self-tuning radio

Musicovery : interactive webRadio
http://www.pandora.com/

Have to say, I’m a big fan of Pandora, and I’ve been using it for a while. The basic idea is that you initially prime the system by telling it what kind of music you like (either a song, or a band), and it then starts pulling in other music which is ’similar’. You can then give those songs the thumbs up, or thumbs down, depending on if you like it or not. Eventually you’ll hone in on some new bands who play music you like - which is brilliant. Some great little icons there for building little interfaces - also has the world flags, saved under their country name. Top work!

Video : sitepoint on web 2.0

What’s it all about, AJAX? SAS? Blah, blah, blah.

It’s really about using the web for what it was meant for in the first place - to enable people to communicate with each other, using the power of broadcasting via the internet to get your message out there. This is a really good presentation by Kevin Yank of Sitepoint.
