Making Outlook a *bit* more like GMail

The threaded view on GMail is just genuis. I don’t know how long exactly email has been around for, but it’s longer than I have - and only GMail seems to have gotten the interface right.

Not just the correct threading of emails, but threading the conversation - both the incoming and the outgoing emails all together. In one place.

So, since I’m forced to use Outlook at work, how can it be hacked about a bit to make it ‘work’ better for me?

vBulletin 3.3 and datastore problems

Really strange problem with vBulletin on one of the forums I look after today. MySQL ran out of available connections (even to the root user), and the site ground to a halt. Quick reboot of the server so I could get in, and SHOW PROCESSLIST showed me loads and loads and loads of threads trying to retrieve data from the datastore tables..

Something like

SELECT title, data FROM datastore WHERE title IN (’cron’,'forumcache’,..)

go60sharing site gets updated

This is still a work in progress - more content and functionality to come, but for now, here some linkage :

This is a project i’m involved with, which is looking to raise money for the International Red Cross, and re-create the original overland crossing between London and Singapore.

Transferring email from one place to another

Or, how to use Fetchmail to reliably move large quantities of email from one place to another

If, like me, your normal email machine has vanished into a black hole at some service department somewhere *cough*apple*cough*, then you’ll quite quickly find out that :

  • Being un-connected is a strange, but not wholly unpleasant experience..
  • .. but you still need to get at your email, but you don’t want to be setting it up on another machine because then you’ll just have email spread in a whole bunch of different directions

Fear not - the solution to the problem is just to create a webmail account with GMail* and use Fetchmail to push all of your email in there. All you need is a little terminal magic, and a program which is installed by default in OS X.

Killing Dashboard, Desktops, how Digg scales and 99 Developer links

Kill the Dashboard - you haven’t got any widgets which are actually useful, and it’s using RAM which could be used for something else which is actually useful.

Free Wallpapers - including sources which span across multiple monitors..

How Digg Scales - Interesting one this, since 99% of their page views are reads, perhaps they should be generating static content, rather than trying to read everything out of the database..

99 Developer Links - great stuff in here

750 Formula website update

Hi all,

Sorry about this. It looks like all of the post data is still in the database, so nothing has been lost - but - the site seems to have lost it’s marbles about how they are all connected together. I’ll be replacing the forum software with something else which should be more reliable.

Dreamhosts - Technical support page

Cards on the table, this site (and a few others which I run) used to be hosted with DH. I liked their approach, I liked their pricing, and I liked (and continue to like) the exchange rate between GBP and USD, which made it excellent value for money.
