Great apps, Refresh the finder and a very funny online comic

101-essential-freelancing-resources - which came via Lifehacker. Really great list of applications (browser based & traditional). One which I’m interested in is ActiveCollab - an open source clone of Basecamp (although it’s implemented in PHP, not Ruby + Rails). I’ll be trialling this one out. I do really like Basecamp, but the powers that be wouldn’t go for the monthly cost, and the inability to hack it to better suit us (without creating a wrapper site using the API + our own data).

Refresh the finder - Sometimes, finder (bless it), just won’t freaking refresh the current display of files. This is far more common on network shares mounted via SMB, even SSHFS shares seem to be work ok. Anywho, this allows you to add a refresh button to your finder window.

XKCD, Very funny online comic, if you’re slightly nerdy/geeky (or a lot, in my case..)

VLC UDP Streaming, Flying Google Maps & Extra big desktops

How to setup your own video streaming on your network using VLC (more useful than it sounds :) )

If you’ve got a whole bunch of movies on one machine, which you’d like to watch on another, then you’ve got 2 options. If the movies play in iTunes, then you can share them that way quite quickly & easily. If they don’t (i.e. they are DivX or whatever, or you’re not using iTunes/Mac), but they do play in VLC, then you can use VLC to stream them from the host computer to the computer where you want to watch them. This how-to from MacDevCenter is aimed at transmitting a live HDTV stream from one machine to another, but it works with anything VLC can open.

This is better than sharing the network drive and opening the files that way, since there is a *lot* less overhead - i.e. a more stable video stream. Using the HTTP remote control, you can control the video stream arriving at your viewing machine.

Flying Google maps - a little ‘game’ which allows you to fly around Google Maps

Extra Big Desktops

More desktop space is the best productivity boost you can have - being able to have multiple windows open without having them overlap makes life a lot easier. Matrox have (and are releasing a new DVI enabled) box, which presents a single large screen to the OS, and deals with the splitting itself. It looks like a really neat piece of kit.. I could run 2 * 1920×1200 screens from a single MBP… There are dual head, and triple head options..

Mounting SSH as a filesystem and use SVN (this is *good*)

MacFUSE & sshfs. Ok - this allows you to mount up (and view in finder) those file systems which you would otherwise only be able to access via SSH (either via the command line, or via some SCP/SFTP capable client, like Cyberduck or Fugu). Now you can drag/drop files, and interact with those files as if they were on a mounted local network drive, or an external hard disk.

Not only that, but it’s fully accessible though the command line as well, since it’s available through /Volumes/.

Amusing OS X login window fun

(Via http://daringfireball.net/ )

The progress bar & window which you see when OS X starts up is nothing but a window popped up by the login window process starting, which it then promptly terminates once it’s ready for you to actually log in.

It’s all just smoke and mirrors!

You can start this process off for yourself (if you’re feeling nerdy and bored), following these simple instructions..
