Cadwell Trackday weekend
This was kind of our hen and stag weekend do, before the wedding. Since I failed to complete the rebuild on the supernail in time, we had to take out the supercharger instead.
Never before tried on track by us, it really surprised me - it’s almost utterly stock. Stock Supercharger pulley & engine (~140bhp), stock, and original suspension (~100,000 kms on it). The only thing which is non-stock are the tyres, which are slightly wider than standard, and sat on 15″ rims. I was a little concerned that with the standard amount of power on tap, that it would just be over-tyred, and probably understeery (and boring).
So, Sunday morning rolls around, with lots of rain (but no snow), and the track is wet. So wet in fact that there is a *very* large puddle through Hall, and loads of standing water down the start / finish and park straight.
We go out for sighting laps, and disaster strikes down one of the mk1s there on the day - System-G and mr2mk1chicks track car dropped some oil, and was out for the day before it had begun
So, we got a couple of sessions each in before lunch, taking relatives and other mr2 owners around the track. I found the car very controllable, with power-on oversteer out of park, mansfield and the hairpin on demand. We enjoyed ourselves so much, that we managed to do about 160kms in the morning, and go through a whole tank of fuel. Superchargers are *slightly* heavier on fuel than the NA was around there.
The hairest moments were on the old parts of the circuit - Hall was very very slippery, and just caused loads of understeer for most of the day, and the entry to the hairpin was also slippery, causing a couple of lockups on the way in.
As the day went on, it started to dry out (although it was still cold), so the speeds into Coppice increased, with me bottling out somewhere around 4.5k in 4th gear (however fast that is..) Pretty sure that with less oil on the track, there is more in there.
The two sherwood toning coloured cars managed to find the barriers though. The trackday queen had a minor moment through hall, and damaged the front wing of BenFs car. Cartledge_uk had a more serious (and highspeed) off on the exit of charlies, and found the tyres on the inside..
I also got a ride out in a Z4, which was mighty impressive. Even the little engined one (2.0l) seems to have plenty of torque on tap, and very (very) keen traction control through barn corner. Brakes were very good (compared to the SC, which had started to go long by then), and felt like lots of front end grip.. apart from a minor moment out on the first lap into the hairpin.
I’d just like to say thank you to everybody who came for the weekend, and who came for the trackday - it made it special. We hope to see you all again at Anglesey..
